A canker sore is an ulcer (open wound) in the mouth, appearing as either a painful white (yellow) surrounded by a border poorly reddish gray could be a canker sore which is very different from a fever blister or herpes. The medical term for canker sores are Apthous stomatitis. These ulcers are usually apthous small (1-5 mm), appearing alone or as a cluster of small ulcers. But they can sometimes be larger (5-10mm). They can occur at any age but occur more commonly in women. sores occur inside the mouth, appearing on the fabric moving mouth: the tongue, soft palate, cheeks and coating inside the lip or the bottom of the gingiva (vestibule). It usually starts with a burning sensation, followed by a red ulcerated area. These painful ulcers may take 1-2 weeks to heal. The sores are rarely associated with any other illness and fever is rare. The sores should not be confused with herpes (commonly called cold sores or herpes labialis). Herpes labialis occurs most often outside of the mouth, and around the lips and face. When herpes occurs in the mouth, it occurs only in tissues that are non-motile gums adjacent to teeth (gums) and hard palate (roof of the mouth) herpes ulcers are smaller than canker sores and ulcerative blistering form before. canker sore outbreaks are common and may continue for years.
