What is the best way to make a toothpick bridge? In my physics class we need to make toothpick bridges using only 250 toothpicks (or less) and glue. The bridge must hold at least five pounds of sand, and if it owns more than we get additional credit. Here's what the document says:
1.) You must use toothpicks normal business (not dish or large). You can not cut or modify the toothpicks in any way.
2.) You can use the following types of glue: Elmer's glue, wood glue or carpenter's glue.
3.) You can not use anything other than toothpicks and glue in the construction of your deck.
4.) Your deck must have a mass greater than 85 grams. A good rule of thumb to keep under this AMSS is to use no more than 250 toothpicks and do not use excessive amounts of glue.
5.) The bridge must be 55cm long and will cover an area of 45cm (the rest 5cm overlap on each side resting on the table)
6.) The bridge must have a portion of 20 cm long flat on top to place on the loading plate. In addition, the bridge must have a hole for the hook at the end of the load plate to pass through.
7.) Your gateway should not be more than 10cm high (so that the hook can be adapted throughout the latter).
* Your bridge will be tested to determine how much weight it can hold before breaking or falling. Receive full credit, your deck must have at least 5 pounds.
What I really need a good strong design. Does anyone have any suggestions? We have three days to finish it in class and on weekends. We begin to build on Wednesday 8-119-09.
