Australia: Perth dentist lists top 10 products of oral hygiene and advice

Every day patients ask me "what kind of toothbrush should I use" or "can you recommend a dental floss?

Well here's the top ten things on my list

  1. floss. They are all good, but one of my favorites is "Reach waxed dental floss" or the mint called "money" just for taste. Remember "you do not have to floss all your teeth ... only the ones you want to keep!"
  2. brushes. Many people can not floss, do not be flossing, hate thread, just ran out of silk, etc. etc. After 25 years I have heard every excuse in the book. It is difficult and, fortunately, there is an alternative. Tiny brushes that go between the teeth, not the great who will only pass under a bridge, next to an implant or if you have periodontal disease. I like those of Switzerland drew CURAPROX. There will soon be more about them.
  3. Toothpicks. Go, the least we can do is choose your teeth! Not the people around you get a cocktail (in your martini) or with the corner of a map of old business. I speak special triangular base of soft wood. They do not hurt your gums and make a very good job, and at least get the bits of food. At Perth in Australia we get the brand Sensodyne "fine InterDens" which are excellent and you have to moisten them before using.
  4. manual toothbrush. Very sweet, but nothing too fancy. Again there is nothing to beat the CURAPROX and the one I prefer is the CS 3960 "Supersoft"
  5. Electric or electric toothbrush. If you are going to spend money to make the best of it. Many patients do better with a hand brush that good throwing power. You can not beat the Braun Oral-B Triumph Professional Care 9500 or the Sonic Complete.
  6. own language or use high-daily is essential to ensure fresh breath. These work much better than brushing the tongue. We offer all of our eleven patients that I developed called the "breath-So-Fresh. Some pharmacies now have a few different stock and you should try several, as all languages are a bit different. Find one reaching the rear third of the tongue and is not too strong but still effective.
  7. Mouthwash. Most of my patients do not need. I posted recently on the controversy surrounding oral cancer and mouthwash strong alcohol. In some cases, I recommend Curasept 0.12% chlorhexidine toothpaste without staining and mouthwash. Learn more about this soon.
  8. Toothpaste. I dislike the most expensive with many ingredients. All he needs is a mild abrasive and fluoride. I like Colgate Cavity Fluorigard Great Regular Flavor.
  9. plaque disclosing tablets. Yes, the little tablets that you chew and all your teeth will roses are still there. By the way, the rose is the set of the plate that you missed. New tablets now available shows an old blue plate.
  10. Timer. You can not brush effectively in less than 2 minutes regardless of your technique. It feels like forever, but it is just 2 minutes!
