Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth and gradually destroys the tissues that surround and support teeth.

Preventing gum disease involves methods for controlling and preventing the amount of tartar and plaque buildup on teeth. These measures include good dental hygiene, proper nutrition, choice of lifestyle and regular visits to the dentist.

A good dental hygiene: brush your teeth at least twice a day, helps keep plaque and tartar buildup at bay. You should preferably use toothbrushes bristles because they are less abrasive and make sure that the hair is in good condition. Make a habit of changing your toothbrush every three months. interdental brushes and flossing help remove food particles under the gum between the teeth and other places that regular toothbrush can not reach. Use a toothpaste and mouthwash containing fluoride because it helps prevent decay and strengthen teeth.

Good nutrition: Eating a variety of foods from different food groups, such as fruits and vegetables, dairy products, poultry, meat, fish, cereals and grains provide your teeth and gums healthy.

healthy lifestyle choices: starchy and sugary foods and drinks do more harm to teeth when eaten between meals. Regular visits to the dentist: Dentists and dental hygienists are essential to help prevent any type of tooth decay or gum erosion. Regular teeth check-up and stop the degradation of the rubber progresses. The dentist can offer useful advice based on the health of your teeth and gums. Scaling and polishing of teeth can help remove tartar that hardens and can be removed by simple brushing and flossing.
