How to brush your teeth may not be the greatest way, you have an impact on the planet, but that is another in a long list of green lifestyle choices you can make every day. If each of us live to the ripe old age of 80 years, we contribute an average of 300 toothbrushes during our lives. That's a lot of plastic waste! Each year, we Americans add 50 million pounds of toothbrushes to landfills, most of which are non-biodegradable plastic, which is just there for hundreds of years.

Or your old toothbrush can make a trip to the ocean where it can suffocate wildlife, eventually floating in the sea or washed up on the beach where it is not only unsightly, there is a danger to terrestrial animals. Nobody wants their romantic walk on the beach to be ruined by the discovery of some old teeth cleaning!

We as consumers need to speak with our shopping dollars to alert companies that produce these products we want greener options that do not dispose of the planet. There is, fortunately, some green products on the market today that make it easier for you to brush more green. Try the following:

  • Recycled Content: Some manufacturers have capitalized on opportunities for recycled plastics by producing whole toothbrushes that are made of recycled materials. Recycling rather than using virgin materials has advantages threefold: it saves energy, saves water and reduces the amount of waste sent to the trash. Do not worry, the hair is generally made from new plastic. Radius and two options Recycline toothbrush made with recycled content.
  • replaceable heads: Some toothbrushes can now be found with the heads to replace when worn. This way, you reuse the handle again and again, reducing the overall non-recyclable waste you create. Eco-Dent, Radius, and Fuchs Ekotec all options developed along these lines.
  • biodegradable content: Another good option for teeth cleaning green is to buy a toothbrush from natural materials, biodegradable and non-plastic. A company called Acca Kappa is a toothbrush from a cotton extract, which apparently will biodegrade in about six months!

And if you're addicted to your electric toothbrush, you too can get a toothbrush ecological opting for one powered by the sun! Although still relatively untested these could reduce your energy consumption, and many come with replaceable heads, making them a bit more eco-friendly toothbrushes classic.

Again .. How to brush your teeth may not be the greatest way, you have an impact on the planet, but it is another in a long list of green living choices you make every day.
