Can You Get Herpes From Oral

Alright guys, I have a question. I hear the oral herpes are very common and most people have without even realizing it, but my question is, if you have a cold sore does that mean you have herpes? Or you just have a cold sore? And if you have oral sex the other person could genital herpes from your cold sores?
